Update on on the Cuthbert Bridge
May 3, 2023

The Cuthbert Bridge was laid into place today! After months of work and a team effort from so many friends and City of Greenwood leaders, the bridge has landed. These pictures show the progress today and a stunning look at the first sunset over the Cuthbert Bridge. Soon we will be announcing Dedication Day!

Video shot and edited by Daniel McDaniel as bridge was placed on Wednesday May 3, 2023.

Update on Bridge,
December 3, 2022

Dramatic progress is being made on the Cuthbert Bridge project on Lake Greenwood. Below is a video shot in early December 2022. Additionally, a local reporter did a series of articles outlining the history, progress and future of the Cuthbert Bridge. Thanks to Daniel McDaniel, the Greenwood Mayor and City Council along with several others we will recognize in the future. At this point we are hoping to dedicate the bridge in the Spring of 2023.

Update on Bridge,
October 22, 2022

The bridge work continues while we try to cross the financing finish line. Thanks to all the family and community members who have generously donated to this project! As of today, the city is driving piles to support the structure while the water level remains low. We need continued financial support to cross the finish line. We had some nice coverage of the project from Resident News reporter Tammy Teague. She is doing a three part series on the project and we hope this coverage will draw additional support. Thanks!

Cuthbert Bridge Project Overview

The idea behind the Cuthbert Bridge project is threefold.  First, the city of Greenwood has a need to connect the boat ramp and parking area to the trails across the cut (see picture).  Currently, residents have to park and walk along the side of Mt. Harmony road to access the trail.  This trail connects to the Boy Scout pavilion and trails leading into Greenwood and the park system.

Secondly, the city has invested a good deal into the boat launch area and made it more usable.  That said, use is limited to those fishing on the lake.  There is no good place to fish from without a boat.  The bridge would span the width of the cut (~200 ft.) and create a place for people to walk across and fish from.  Additionally, the bridge will allow for a beautiful view of the sunset as you face West on the apex of the bridge.

Finally, with such a long connection to the city, community and lake, we wanted to honor Thomas R. Cuthbert Jr. and Ernestine Cuthbert.  Dr. Cuthbert served on the water commission and was instrumental in a number of city projects.  Ernestine was active in the community, garden club and church.  The Cuthbert Bridge, to be named in their honor, is a fitting tribute to the contributions they made to the community of Greenwood over the last 28 years.

What’s been done to date:

The original bridge, built in 1931 in Hope, Arkansas

Under the leadership of longtime family friend Daniel McDaniel, the project is underway.  There is an old bridge donated to the city 12 years ago.  This is a structurally sound bridge that was fully utilized in Hope, Arkansas for many years.  (It is rumored that President Clinton would cross this bridge as a young man).  The city of Hope and the State of Arkansas donated this bridge to Greenwood for future use.  The bridge spans 90 feet and, while it will need some work, will work perfectly for the project.

Mr. McDaniel, along with the mayor, Parks Department and City Council, approved the project for construction.  A number of local leaders have already donated time and money to get the project underway.  It is estimated that the total cost will be around $360,000.  To date, $300,000 has been committed by individuals, the city and the Cuthbert family.  We are actively looking for additional investment to complete the project.
